Keys to a Strong Candidate Interview Interviewer’s Name(s): - Candidate should have complete name(s) and title(s) of each individual he/she is scheduled to interview with.
Position Description: - Candidate should have copy of the position description (if available), and should be thoroughly familiar with the duties/responsibilities.
Directions to Interview: - Candidate should have complete address, full directions and estimated commute time to company location.
Helpful hints to the Candidate before the interview! - Research and review the company’s website.
- Dress professional, dress to impress.
- Bring at least 2 copies of the resume.
- Be 15 minutes early for interviews.
- Express interest and enthusiasm.
- Be assertive without being too aggressive.
- Remember importance of good eye contact.
- Be prepared to answer questions about past experiences, and be ready to relate those experiences. The interviewer will be looking for a correlation between these experiences and meeting their needs.
- Compliment past employers, minimize if unpleasant.
General questions they might ask: - Why are you looking for a new job or why did you leave your old one?
- Where would you like to be in five years? What are your goals?
- What makes you unique and why should we hire you?
- What are your salary requirements?
- Why are you interested in our company? (Good occasion to show enthusiasm.)
- Have questions prepared to ask them based on the company research completed. Stay away from questions that are based on “wants” like salary, benefits, stock options, vacation, or corner offices.
Sample questions to ask, when appropriate: - What do you see as the main challenges for this position?
- What would I be able to help you accomplish?
- What qualities are you looking for in the person for this job?
- What does it take for someone to be successful here?
- How does my background and experience fill your requirements?
- When will you make your selection?
- What is the next step in this process?
- Try not to discuss salary with them. If asked, de-emphasize money. Tell them that salary requirements have been discussed with your recruiter and you’ve been reassured that the position meets those requirements. If it comes down to it, give them a range, but not a specific figure. (It is the recruiter’s job to negotiate on behalf of the candidate.)
- Be honest and consistent with all the information previously shared with the recruiter.
- At the end of the interview, express excitement about the opportunity.
- If you are interested in the position, tell the interviewer. It is important to show them your interest!!
